mwbwNomex (scritto mwcaNOMEX) è un marchio registrato che indica una sostanza a base di meta-mwcqaramide resistente alle fiamme sviluppata nei primi mwcganni sessanta dalla mwcwDuPont e commercializzata a partire dal 1967.cite-ref-1[1]

Chimicamente può esser considerato un mweqnylon mwegaromatico, la variante meta del para-aramide mwewKevlar. È venduto sia sotto forma di fibra che di fogli, utilizzato per produrre oggetti resistenti al calore ed alle fiamme. I fogli di Nomex sono prodotti analogamente alla carta facendoli passare attraverso dei cilindri. Il Nomex tipo 410 è stato il primo ad essere prodotto ed uno dei più utilizzati nella fabbricazione di mwfaisolanti elettrici. I fogli di Nomex sono utilizzati sia nella produzione di pannelli elettrici, nuclei di trasformatori elettrici oppure strutture a mwfqnido d'ape riempite con resine fenoliche. Strutture a nido d'ape come quella descritta e i laminati di mwfgmylar-Nomex sono ampiamente utilizzati nella costruzione degli aerei. Il Nomex è utilizzato per le tute dei pompieri e dei piloti di auto da corsa.

Il sottocasco che i pompieri indossano sopra la maschera respiratoria è fabbricato in Nomex e serve per proteggere dal calore e dalle fiamme le parti della testa non coperte dall'mwgaelmetto.

Le tute dei piloti automobilistici sono fabbricate in Nomex ed altri materiali ritardanti di fiamma. Anche i guanti, il sottotuta, le calze e le scarpe sono fabbricate con lo stesso materiale. La mwggFIA stabilisce alcune norme per la resistenza al fuoco degli abiti utilizzati che prevedono la resistenza al calore per almeno trenta secondi.

Si sta sperimentando l'uso del Nomex anche per le sue proprietà acustiche in quanto è in grado di riflettere suoni di alta frequenza e di rinforzare suoni di media e bassa frequenza.

The standards range from single layer suits that provide some protection against flash fires to much thicker multi layer SFI&#x2D;15 suits required by the [[NHRA|National Hot Rod Association]] that can protect a driver for up to 30 seconds against the intense heat generated by the [[nitromethane]] fuel they use. [[Armed forces|Military]] [[aviator|pilots]] and aircrew wear flight suits made of over 92 percent Nomex to protect them from the possibility of [[Cockpit (aviation)|cockpit]] fires and other mishaps. Recently, troops riding in ground vehicles have also begun wearing Nomex. The remaining material is typically Kevlar thread used to hold the fabric together at the seams. In the U.S. space program, Nomex has been used for the [[Thermal Micrometeoroid Garment]] on the [[Extravehicular Mobility Unit]] (in conjunction with [[Kevlar]] and [[Gore&#x2D;Tex]]) and [[Advanced Crew Escape Suit|ACES]] pressure suit, both for fire and extreme environment (water immersion to near vacuum) protection, and as thermal blankets on the payload bay doors, fuselage, and upper wing surfaces of the [[Space Shuttle]] Orbiter. It has also been used for the airbags for the [[Mars Pathfinder]] and [[MER]] rovers, the [[Galileo spacecraft|Galileo atmospheric probe]], the [[Cassini&#x2D;Huygens]] [[Titan (moon)|Titan]] probe, and will be incorporated into the new [[Crew Exploration Vehicle]] that will replace the Shuttle after 2010. Nomex has also been used for its unique acoustic qualities, the first time being used in Troy, NY at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center [[EMPAC]]'s main concert hall. Nomex reflects high&#x2D;frequency sound, and increases mid&#x2D; and low&#x2D;level frequency sound. According to RPI President Shirley Ann Jackson, EMPAC is the first venue in the world to use Nomex for acoustic reasons.
